Runs Well With Others: NMDP

Join us for our last meetup at Rise Authentic Baking Co. before we find a new home for the Spring/Summer season! This month, we’re proud to partner with @mi.in_nmdp as they share their mission to support families battling blood and bone disorders.

Just like Friendship Miles builds community through movement, NMDP is building a culture of donation—ensuring every searching patient can find their lifesaving match. NMDP is a global nonprofit that is dedicated to saving lives through cell transplantation and cell therapy. We operate the most diverse member registry to support our efforts in stem cell and bone marrow transplants. We want to provide everyone the opportunity to engage with this work whether that is volunteering, raising awareness or funds, and hopefully joining the donor registry, if one is able.

The registry is open to all who are ages 18-40 and medically eligible. 90% of NMDP transplants are stem cell donations, performed typically in a single day through one’s peripheral blood supply, akin to donating platelets. The remaining 10% of the time, donations involve collection of bone marrow under general anesthesia. With either donation, there are no long-term adverse effects expected and donors’ recovery quickly, feeling better after just the first few days. In addition, donation is 100% expenses covered, and donors will not be expected to pay for any part of the donation process including travel, meals and accommodations for the donor and one companion.

NMDP seeks to support the global and local community by providing resources, information and support for every family battling blood or bone disorders and cancers. Much like Friendship Miles seeks to foster community and inclusivity through movement, we want to foster a culture of donation so that every searching patient can find their lifesaving match.
